Searching for jobs, I noticed every job advertised for a Project Manager requires a 4 year degree. I have no such thing. Time to work on my job security...

Don't let it stop you from applying.

Every company says 4 year degree required these days for decent paying jobs. Doesn't mean they enforce the requirement 100% of the time. I've hired people that didn't have that requirement if I liked everything else the applicant had and his or her desired starting pay was right

I recently hired a second paralegal — I had three people with JDs apply, two with four year degrees and 'paralegal certifications', and one with on a CC degree (in a completely unrelated field) and a paralegal certification (short program that really doesn't amount to dick). I hired the person with the CC degree because they were the best for the job, honestly researched better, and had a better attitude than the other ones. Keep your head up!

Right, I'm sure they WANT graduates, but it may not be a requirement.

The "4 year degree" may just be to eliminate the riff raff.

My dads a project manager... His degree has nothing to do with being a project manager and it's a very reputable company.

Give it a shot anyways, worst case scenario they say no. Life is filled with no's.

I mean, as far as you know, nope. Research drawn from the oppo map is shady at best.

Exactly. They do WANT it. But people and companies don't always get what they want.

It's like when you're single and you meet a pretty girl who is flat. If she is into you and has a great personality are you going to reject her because she doesn't have bigger boobs? If she meets all your other desired traits it would he crazy not to date her.

Same thing goes with new hires. If someone is awesome and meets all your needs except for the degree you can make an exception. Especially if you need to place the position right away and there aren't better candidates with related industry work experience who do have 4 year degrees. Hiring is a pain and being patient is tough when you need to replace someone who left or are growing fast and need someone new pronto.

Are you a project manager now or have recent experience?

My company calls me a PM, but I'd refer to myself as an assistant project manager. I've got 5 years experience. I'm trying to see what else is out there, as I get the feeling that my company is closing down their general construction division and although my division is very profitable we cannot support $1,000,000 payroll for the owners, and they have a habit of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I haven't got a degree and am always being offered jobs that have a 4 year degree requirement plus experience. The degree requirement is there 99% of the time to allow more recent college grads a shot of applying and to screen out the complete riffraff from applying (doesn't work).

These are the things that matter in getting a job, in order of importance:
1. Who you know.
2. How well you interview.
3. What you look like on the interview.
4. Work history.
5. References.
6. School transcripts.

That is true in every position I have ever seen.
